Juanjo Mena, the most internationally renowned Basque conductor, returns to the Basque National Orchestra Season with a programme that opens with one of the most beautiful creations of Kaija Saariaho's final period. The Finnish composer, a leading figure in composition over recent decades who died in 2023, called her clarinet concerto D'om Le Vrai Sens, a score that explores the human senses and which she dedicated to the great Finnish soloist Kari Kriikku, who will also perform it for the first time in Euskadi. For the second part, Mena will present Franz Schubert's symphonic masterpiece, the Symphony no. 9, «The Great». Recovered by Schumann from a bundle of papers, it reveals both the influence of Beethoven’s symphonies and his desire to transcend them. Given its length and complexity, it was not performed regularly until 50 years after Schubert's death.
