Our chief conductor Robert Treviño, who has performed Gustav Mahler's symphonies with orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic, will conclude Season 24/25 as he opened it: with a great Mahler symphony. We are thus approaching the end of the full cycle that Treviño began a few years ago together with the National Basque Orchestra. Symphony No.7, completed by Mahler in 1905, is a triumphant work that departs from the personal narrative of other symphonies to offer us a metaphysical journey from night to day (hence its nickname, "Song of the Night"). It is also a symphony of nature, taking in the Carinthian landscape of Lake Wörthersee, where Mahler spent two summers composing it: "With the first dip of the oars in the water, the theme of the introduction (or rather, its rhythm, its atmosphere) came to me", the Bohemian composer would recall years later.
