Michal Nesterowicz is among the most remarkable conductors Poland has produced in recent decades, acclaimed for his mastery of the Russian repertoire and, in particular, for his affinity with the music of Tchaikovsky. It is precisely this universe of sound around which will revolve his reunion with the Basque National Orchestra. He will be accompanied by the Moscow born pianist Boris Giltburg, winner of the Queen Elizabeth Competition in Belgium, to tackle Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3, the most lyrical of the five written by this composer-pianist who also knew how to embrace the percussive dimension of the instrument. The season will close with a work marked by the notion of destiny: Symphony No. 5 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Composed during the summer of 1888, its development was an arduous process, as the composer sought to combine symphonic architecture with an occult programme, Slavic folklore and the language of ballet, resulting in one of the most unique symphonies of the 19th century.
