Information

Schopenhauer stated that “fate shuffles the cards and we play”. Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 starts with the hugely famous motif of fate calling at the door, but with those four notes Beethoven built a symphonic building that was revolutionary at the time. Fate and religion are also fundamental in Wagner’s opera Parsifal the “Prelude” of which will open this programme that is completed with Shostakovich’s Concerto for Violin No.2. Through its unusual key, C-sharp minor, the concert nods to Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, which Shostakovich had heard in Vienna two years earlier and we can listen to in the next season concert. Russian violinist Alena Baeva, winner of the Wieniawski and Paganini prizes, and Dinis Sousa, principal conductor of the Royal Northern Sinfonia in the United Kingdom, will make their début alongside the Basque National Orchestra with this ambitious programme.
