Information
The Russian from Saint Petersburg, Dmitri Makhtin, will perform the work of his namesake and compatriot, the great Shostakovich. And Germany’s Beethoven.
Written towards the end of his life, by then in poor health, Shostakovich’s Concerto for Violin no. 2 hosts in its interior biographical riddles, a dark tone which seems to turn the violin into a viola and veiled references to previous works in his catalogue, such as Symphony No. 5. Shostakovich wrote this concert for the famous Russian violinist in his day, David Oistrakh, and we will welcome one of today’s leading Russian violinists, Dmitri Makhtin, born in Saint Petersburg like Shostakovich.
In the second part, Robert Treviño will address the least performed of the nine symphonies composed by Beethoven, Symphony No. 2 in D major, essential, nevertheless, in the evolution of his language. Completed in 1803, with this symphony Beethoven crowned the period of his initial classical style and started dabbling in the Romantic era.
