Information
Paul Goodwin, a pioneer of early music associated with ensembles such as The English Concert and the Academy of Ancient Music, invites us to a workshop where we can explore the reinvention of Bach’s music over the centuries. Following a collection of cantata symphonies, transcribed by Goodwin himself, comes Elgar’s version of the Fantasy and Fugue in C minor, which reveals a monumental Bach by emphasising the nobility of the organ-like harmonies through a rich use of orchestral resources. In stark contrast, Webern transformed the Fuga a 6 Voci of the Musical Offering into a study of pointilliste tones, where each note shifts from instrument to instrument. This will be followed by works by Vaughan Williams and Holst, who viewed Bach’s chorales and fugues through a romantic and pastoral lens, and the blend of styles by Heitor Villa-Lobos, who, in his Bachianas Brasileiras, combined Bach’s counterpoint with Brazilian rhythms and melodies.
