The sixth concert programme resumes the theme of the supernatural with the ominous Sound of the Witches, commissioned from the composer from Arrasate, Beatriz Arzamendi. The programme will then take on a Polish twist. Primarily because of the two guest artists: conductor Lukasz Borowicz, the chief conductor of the Poznan Philharmonic Orchestra and chief guest conductor of the Kraków Philharmonic, and the pianist Rafal Blechacz, one of the leading current piano figures after winning the Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2005. Together they will perform Camille Saint-Saëns' vibrant and colourful Piano Concerto No.2, followed by one of the masterpieces of Polish music: Karol Szymanowski's Symphony No.2. Little remembered outside his own country today, Szymanowski became truly popular worldwide in the early 20th century thanks to pieces such as this one, in which he blends dense contrapuntal work with Polish lyricism.
