Beethoven is again the protagonist of our next concert, a full-scale symphonic-choir evening helmed by Hans Graf, the Orchestra's conductor from 1994 to 1996 and Music Director of the Houston Symphony for over twelve years. The Orchestra and Andra Mari Abesbatza will join forces to breathe life into three of Beethoven's choral works: Calm Sea & Prosperous Voyage, Elegiac Song and the still highly original Choral Fantasy, with Vitoria-born Alfonso Gómez on piano. The second part will be dedicated to Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1, the impeccable exercise of compositional virtuosity which the Russian composer, still a teenager, wrote as his graduation piece at the Leningrad Conservatory. Unlike his later symphonies, which have given rise to much speculation about his political intent, here we find pure Shostakovich abounding in talent.
