Robert Treviño, new music director of the Basque National Orchestra
The American Robert Treviño will be the new Music Director of the Basque National Orchestra from the 2017/18 Season onwards. The highest artistic leader of the Basque orchestra will assume his leading role for the 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons. This appointment, suggested by the General Director of the Euskadi Orchestra, Oriol Roch, was approved by the Board of Directors held last November. Robert Treviño will take over from Jun Märkl whose three-season contract, which began in autumn 2014, finishes in June 2017.
The new music director has conducted the Basque Orchestra on two occasions. His first collaboration occurred last March in a programme of the Season Concerts where he conducted Bruckner's 7th Symphony. The second collaboration took place in September, in Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao at the celebration of the BBK Museo Hiria/Museum City project. Robert Treviño fits the new director profile and he will continue to contribute to the projection and consolidation of this musical ensemble as a key project in Euskadi.
In terms of his career, it should be noted that Robert Treviño is assuming the role at the Basque National Orchestra as part of his progressive and ascending international career. What was considered an unprecedented success in the difficult and legendary Bolshoi Theatre (Moscow) in December 2013 became for Treviño the start of a growing career as the guest conductor in Europe and Asia. He has already debuted with orchestras of such standing as the Munich and London Philharmonics, the Bamberg Symphony, the Orchestre Nacional de France and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. And in the United Sates he continues his career at the head of Detroit, San Francisco, Cleveland and Cincinnati. Of the concerts that he will conduct in the coming weeks, particularly important are those that will be performed at the La Folle Journée in Nantes (3 to 5 February) or his commitments to lead the Bamberg Symphony (26 and 27 January), Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (11 March) or the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (16 and 17 March).
With his appointment as music director, Robert Treviño joins the group of conductors that have guided the Basque National Orchestra since its formation in 1982. Treviño's role has previously been held by Jun Märkl, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Gilbert Varga y Cristian Mandeal, Mario Venzago, Hans Graf, Miguel Ángel Gómez Martínez, Matthias Kuntzsch, Maximiano Valdés and Enrique Jordá (honorary conductor of the Orchestra in the past).
