Nearly one hundred years separate Anton Webern's Passacaglia from Ramon Lazkano's Hilarriak. Prior to Webern's twelve-tone period, Passacaglia (1908) already foreshadows many of his revolutionary ideas; Lazkano's piece (2003), on the other hand, is one of the fundamental works of Basque music of the new millennium, a celebration of rhythm and orchestral energy. With these two works, Robert Treviño wants to set a challenge that culminates in one of the most beautiful symphonies of the Scandinavian repertoire. Symphony No. 2 by Jean Sibelius is also a foundational piece: after its 1902 première the symphony was quickly adopted as a model and standard of Finnish nationalism at a time when Finland was marching steadily towards independence.
