The Orchestra Season concludes with a work that is always an event in itself. Symphony No. 2 by Gustav Mahler, known as “Resurrection”, took the Bohemian composer six years to finish, and in it he introduced for the first time the human voice and the other-worldly themes that would be central to much of his later work. The symphony is an immense creation, which from the funeral march of the initial movement to the final resurrection chorus crosses all kinds of soundscapes and philosophical reflections.
Robert Treviño, whose mastery of Mahler’s music is gaining recognition throughout the world, has invited two vocal soloists who are specialists in Mahler, soprano Sarah Fox and mezzo-soprano Justina Gringyte, and a local choir which has performed this work all over the world and has made it into the choir’s calling card: the Orfeón Donostiarra.
