This programme dedicated to Russia opens with two of the most famous pages of its Romanticism: the Overture to Ruslan and Liudmila by Glinka, patriarch of Russian musical nationalism, and the Violin Concerto by Tchaikovsky, interpreted by the Korean violinist Bomsori, winner of such prestigious competitions as the Sibelius, the Queen Elizabeth or the Tchaikovsky. Composed in a creative outburst, Tchaikovsky's concerto was rejected by its dedicatee, the great virtuoso Leopold Auer, who found it "unplayable", though it would soon take pride of place among the great concertos for the instrument. Following the premiere of Guernica, the most recent orchestral creation by the Basque composer Félix Ibarrondo, we will then delve into another great Russian classic: Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, in Maurice Ravel's masterful orchestration. The young Colombian conductor Ana María Patiño will conduct the Basque National Orchestra for the first time, with this demanding and evocative programme.
