Pascal Gaigne became one of the most famous Basque composers thanks to his work on the silver screen, earning him such prestigious recognitions as the Goya Award. Lesser known is his music for concert halls, which the Basque National Orchestra will demonstrate through two new works it commissioned from Gaigne: Urrutiko arimak and Urruneko azalak, which were composed during the pandemic as a reflection thereon. Following the path of discovery, our associate conductor Jaume Santonja will present two symphonies by Tchaikovsky that, when compared with the last three he composed, are less well known yet essential to understanding his creative evolution. Symphony No.1 “Winter Dreams” is steeped in the Russian’s unmistakable melodic talent; and Symphony No.3, “Polish”, opens the door to the influence of ballet in his symphonic production.
