Robert Treviño, an expert in American music, turns his attention to Samuel Barber, whose extensive musical production has been overshadowed by his extremely popular Adagio for Strings. His Concerto for Violin, composed in 1939, is one of the most beautiful examples of late American romance, abounding in refined melodies and direct expression. The soloist is James Ehnes, the magnificent Canadian concert violinist who earned a Grammy nomination for his recording of this concert. Sergei Rachmaninoff, who emigrated in the United States following the Russian Revolution, exerted an enormous influence on composers in the New World. Treviño selected Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2, a roaring victory after his Symphony No. 1, an absolute disaster which plunged him into a long depression.
