Music has the power to give the particular a universal significance. Gustav Holst was a retired man suffering from neuritis who found solace in Indian philosophy and astrology. This fascination bore fruit in the Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda and, in particular, The Planets, a creation that has captivated the imagination of listeners since its premiere 100 years ago. The works will be conducted by Juanjo Mena, already the most international Basque conductor in history. On his return to our season, he has invited the young choir Vocalia Taldea to bring the beautiful choral fragments of both works to life.
The concert will also see the premiere in the Basque Country of one of the most important Basque compositions of recent years, Zuhaitz by Gabriel Erkoreka, which unites the folk instruments of the trio Kalakan with the complexity of the orchestral sound texture.
