With this programme, we are reviving a piece that had to be cancelled when the pandemic began in 2020, whose revival carries particular symbolic value for the Basque National Orchestra. The piece in question is Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No.2, nicknamed “Resurrection”, which took the Bohemian composer six years of work to complete. Over the course of its hour-and-a-half duration, the piece passes through an extraordinary landscape of sound shaped by a reflection on life and death. For the first time, Mahler also introduced in it the human voice and the otherworldly theme, which would become key to a large part of his later symphonic productions. Having garnered great success conducting Mahler on the international stage, Robert Trevino will work with two vocal soloists specialised in his music, soprano Sarah Fox and mezzo-soprano Justina Gringyte, and a choir that has presented this symphony around the world as its hallmark: the Orfeón Donostiarra.
