After the resounding success of Agartha in 2016, the Basque National Orchestra commissioned the young composer Xabier Otaolea with another work, this time a journey to the icy lands of Izozmendi. The icy countryside is also travelled by Lemminkäinen, one of the heroes of the Finnish national epic poem Kalevala, to whom Sibelius dedicated an evocative suite. The programme, conducted in Vitoria by Mélanie Levy-Thiébaut, will be joined by another two high cards of composing: Johann Sebastian Bach, with a fragment from his Musical Offering; and Igor Stravinsky, who in 1937 captured his fondness for poker in the ballet Jeu de cartes, in which the players and the cards themselves become fantastic protagonists.
