The fairy and the funeral

Stravinsky offers us the delicate winged kiss of a fairy and a funeral song. And Strauss, the adventures of Don Quixote.

Andrey Boreyko will present in this concert the most remarkable musicological finding of recent years. The score of the Funeral Song, written by Stravinsky in 1909 in memory of his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov, which was lost during the Russian Revolution and for more than a hundred years remained hidden beneath a pile of papers in Saint Petersburg, where it was found in 2015.

This is, together with Fireworks, the most important work of Stravinsky’s early period. Contrasting with this page, Boreyko will direct one of the gems of the Russian composer’s neoclassical period, the ballet The Fairy’s Kiss, inspired in the melodies of his compatriot, Tchaikovsky. Ivan Moniguetti, last great student of Rostropovich, will later appear, bringing life to the marvellous cello melodies of Strauss’s Don Quixote.
