Information

Bohemia, the small historic region of present-day Czech Republic that borders Austria, Germany, Poland, and Moravia, was one of the 19th century’s greatest hotbeds of musical talent.  Due to its dealings with the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it was also one of the corners of Europe where composers embraced the new trend of musical nationalism with great passion. Directed by Pietari Inkinen, lead conductor of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie and the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, this programme will present the two leading figures of Bohemian romanticism: Smetana, founding father of the musical nationalist school, with the Overture and three Dances from his opera The Bartered Bride; and Dvorak, with the dramatic Overture Othello and his most popular work, the Symphony No.9, “From the New World”, which has elements of Bohemian folklore despite it being composed during his time in the United States.
