Brahms' Violin Concerto, written in 1878 for the great virtuoso Joseph Joachim, presents formidable challenges for any soloist. In his debut with the Basque National Orchestra, Armenian Sergey Khachatryan, one of the few violinists to have won two of the great international competitions for the instrument –the Sibelius in Helsinki and the Queen Elisabeth in Brussels– will take on this concert of a very symphonic nature, as the orchestra is not relegated to accompanying the soloist but is fully integrated into his discourse. In the second part, St. Petersburg conductor Stanislav Kochanovsky will tackle one of the least performed symphonies by his compatriot Dmitri Shostakovich. In the shadow of the immense success of the tragic No. 5, Symphony No. 6 is more lyrical and contemplative and speaks, according to the Russian composer, of “spring, joy and youth”.
