A national orchestra

Mission, vision and goals

Convinced that the Basque Country has always had in music one of its social backbones, the Basque National Orchestra has the mission – based on professional excellence – to provide a musical backdrop as part of its cultural identity. Its core pursuit is to provide a service to the community by means of spreading and promoting symphony and theatre music both nationally and internationally. This is a multidisciplinary and extremely versatile orchestra which has the basic objective of working on the preparation and giving of concerts and performances, fulfilling not only its artistic and cultural work, but also its social, educational and entertainment aspects.

The Basque National Orchestra works according to the vision of functioning as a national orchestra; it therefore has the vocation of being the leading orchestra in the Country, overcoming local considerations from the internal conviction of working to achieve continuously improved sound and management processes. Added to this is its determination to receive as great a response as possible from the public and to serve as a living cultural reference in its society.

Its objectives are:

  • To stand out inside the Basque Country and beyond its borders as an orchestra that gives excellent performances.
  • To present from its season concerts the most outstanding soloists for each repertoire.
  • To show the symphony repertoire and ‘other music’ from the broadest stance: performing a newly created repertoire, revisiting those already performed and revealing major works unknown to the Basque public.
  • To act as an instrument in educating our young people.
  • To promote projects of collaboration with other cultural institutions in order to perform in different formats (festivals, operas, stage projects, etc.).
  • To maintain our commitment to the society which welcomes and sustains us, and to foster programmes of social inclusion with organisations such as the Basque Federation of Associations in Favour of People with Intellectual Disabilities (FEVAS), or companies in the Gureak Group.
