In his scandalous and revolutionary period, this opera by Mozart widely surpassed the conventions of the buffo genre. Lorenzo Da Ponte extracted from the original comedy by Beaumarchais a rich and complicated libretto, ridiculing the Ancien Régime in a tale where the law of desire commands. (CMF)
