2010-2011 SEASON: Sound in movement

The Basque National Orchestra launches its 2010-2011 season with a wide variety of activities and some important new initiatives. This is the Orchestra's second season under the baton of Principal Conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada. To live up to the slogan chosen for the new season, 'sound in movement', the Basque National Orchestra wants to take another step in promoting the mission and vision for this new stage: quality, vibrancy and involvement.

The season concert programme will include a line-up of well-known names. In addition to the Orchestra's Music Director, Orozco-Estrada, and Principal Guest Conductor, Andrey Boreyko, this season's concerts will highlight appearances by renowned guest conductors Joana Carneiro, Oleg Caetani and Howard Griffiths. Former ten-year principal conductor of the BNO, Gilbert Varga, will also take up the baton as guest conductor. The roster of soloists featured in this season's programme includes Vadim Repin, Arcadi Volodos and Branford Marsalis. One of the highlights of the Season Concerts series will be a performance by the Ballet de Biarritz. Conducted by Eduardo Portal, the BNO will play in the orchestra pit on this occasion to make room for the dancers.

This season will also feature two guest orchestras - the Orquesta de Extremadura, with Principal Conductor Jesús Amigo, and the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, led by General Music Director Andrey Boreyko. Our Orchestra will also be performing away from home with venues in Extremadura, the Aquitaine region of SW France, and Germany.

Among the many highlights of the 2010-2011 season is the launch of a new series called KlasikAt, featuring performances that reach beyond the boundaries of classical music. In this new series Michel Camilo and Jorge Drexler will offer two programmes in conjunction with the Orchestra. KlasikAt will be a new addition to the BNO's well established Season Concerts, Miramón Matinées and Music Room activities.

Three more concerts are scheduled before the end of the Orchestra's 2009-2010 season, which will come to a close in Vitoria on June 4th.
