“Just imagine a work of such magnitude that it actually mirrors the whole world”, wrote Gustav Mahler of his Symphony No. 3. Completed in 1896, this was the first creation to emerge entirely from the lake in the Austrian Alps to which Mahler retreated each summer to compose. When, that summer, conductor Bruno Walter went to visit him and expressed his admiration for the beauty of the surroundings, Mahler advised him not to waste his time looking at it: “Don't bother to look, I've composed all this already”, he said. The Choral Society of Bilbao and mezzo-soprano Justina Gringyte will join the Basque National Orchestra to tackle this symphony, immense in size and duration, which sings the praises of the forces of nature, of plants, animals and human beings, and with which Robert Trevino takes a further step in his aim to complete the Mahler symphony cycle over several seasons.
