The BNO's first time in Extremadura coincides with the tenth anniversary of the Extremadura Orchestra (OEX), a fledgling orchestra that is not only growing in quality, but is becoming an increasingly important fixture in the cultural life of the region. Today the OEX has a subscriber base of over 1000, an impressive number considering Extremadura's population of just over a million. Since the founding of the OEX in 2000, its audience has grown steadily, echoing the development of infrastructure for cultural activities in Extremadura's main cities. As part of the OEX Season Concert programme, the Basque National Orchestra will perform concerts at auditoriums in Mérida and Badajoz, at the Complejo Cultural San Francisco in Badajoz and at the Teatro Alkázar in Plasencia.
